Acrópolis : Desde Tesalónica hasta Atenas. un viaje por la Grecia central con Jerjes y Edward Dodwell

At the beginning of the 19th century, Dodwell embarked on one of the first Grand Tour journeys through Italy and Greece. In Rome, he met the architect and draftsman Simone Pomardi, and together they explored Greece for three years. His account is unique, revealing a country impoverished, lacking political identity, and still under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, yet also hospitable, rugged, and full of surprises. Throughout these beautiful, colorful, and engaging pages, the author alternates his own journey with his daughter with the voices of Herodotus and Dodwell. The journey takes us to the sites of three decisive battles of the Greco-Persian Wars: the beach at Marathon, the island of Salamis, and the plain of Plataea. All these locations ultimately converge in Athens, where the Acropolis takes center stage and where Xerxes razed its temples. Centuries later, Dodwell was a direct witness to the plunder perpetrated there by Lord Elgin. His denunciation of this barbarity allows the author to reflect on this cultural plunder and on the need for the British Museum to return the stolen marbles to Greece.
