Overshadowed by the immense depth of his novels, the three stories collected in this volume are nonetheless three outstanding pieces characteristic of Dostoevsky's more mature work. Although each employs a distinct register—metaphorical in "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man," satirical in "Bobok," tragic in "The Submissive Woman"—all revolve around two of the author's major concerns: on the one hand, the insensitivity to which humanity falls victim due to its alienation from its roots, and on the other, the meaning of its existence on earth.
