The book, which begins with a study on "Marx Today" and ends with another on the relationship, over time, between Marx and the organized labor movement, concluding that, faced with the problems of the 21st-century economy, "the time has come again to take Marx seriously", offers a first part with a series of essays on Marx and Engels, their works, and their political ideas, and a second part dedicated specifically to the evolution of Marxism and its influence from 1880 to the present. As one would expect from Eric Hobsbawm, this is not merely a great history book, but also aspires, as the author himself states, to "help readers reflect on what their future, and that of humanity, will be in the 21st century."
