The Poem of the Cid is the great epic poem of medieval Spanish literature. It narrates the journey of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid Campeador, from his exile to the restoration of his honor. Like all epic poems, it presents an exemplary hero through a poetic narrative conceived for oral transmission. The story recounts the restitution of a knight who, after losing royal favor due to court intrigues and the false accusation of tax evasion, is stripped of his possessions and separated from his family. From this setback, El Cid rebuilds his fortune through his own efforts. This path also benefits his men, who improve their social standing alongside him. In this way, the poem champions the triumph of individual merit and perseverance in the face of adversity. This ability to transform the life of a knight into an example of fortitude explains why, centuries later, El Cid remains one of the most memorable figures in Spanish literature.
