Don Jesús Guzmán Espinosa has dedicated his life to the study of Lord Byron's poem, "The Infidel." An expert in English Romantic literature and heir to a family dynasty that has held a privileged position in a provincial city for generations, the aging professor now faces his greatest fear: time is running out. His retirement will bring to an end a career that, for years, has both blessed and condemned the destinies of students and other professors. Among the characters caught under his influence orbiting around him are his son Chus, a novelist in crisis determined not to follow in his footsteps and to distance himself as much as possible from the family name, and Estefanía, a student from a poor background whose intelligence manages to awaken the professor's admiration. As the university prepares for a succession in which only one misstep separates salvation from failure, the bonds between teacher, student, and heir begin to strain to their breaking point.
