January 1497. For weeks, a series of anonymous letters sent to the court of Pope Alexander VI warn that, in Milan, the controversial Leonardo da Vinci is executing a diabolical work: a mural of the Last Supper in which he has not only painted the apostles without their customary halos of sanctity, but has also included himself among them, with his back to Jesus Christ. Friar Agustín Leyre, a Dominican inquisitor and expert in interpreting coded messages, is sent to the Sforza stronghold to oversee the painting and try to decipher the code protecting the sender of the letters. What he is about to discover will change our understanding of the Renaissance genius's painting… forever.
