La primera nivola de Unamuno, que trata ya uno de los grandes temas del autor: el idealismo polÃtico frente a la imperfección del mundo que intenta arreglarse.
The writing of Nuevo Mundo (New World) takes place at an early but highly significant moment in Miguel de Unamuno's literary and philosophical career. He began and finished it in 1896, the year after his breakthrough with the publication of En torno al casticismo (On Castilianism) (1895). At that time, he was a professor of Greek in Salamanca and was already on the cusp of the spiritual crisis that, the following year, would lead him to distance himself from his socialist political convictions. The manuscript of this first novel, which anticipates many of its author's narrative traits and in which the conflicts between idealism, political practice, and faith are very much present, remained unpublished until it was rediscovered from among his papers almost a century later. This new critical edition aims to highlight the importance of the text as Unamuno's first novel and, in doing so, to emphasize its rightful place within his oeuvre, a place that has been so neglected until now. In addition, the story "Beatriz", published in January 1898 and very close to the universe of Nuevo Mundo, is included.
