After the Battle of Crécy (1346), the central episode of the first installment of this narrative cycle, Thomas of Hookton is sent back to England by the king. There, the Scots, at the behest of the French and taking advantage of weakened defenses, have invaded the north of the country, leading to what will become known as the Battle of Neville's Cross, in which Thomas is reluctantly drawn. This does not prevent him from continuing his quest for the Holy Grail, which takes him back to his hometown and then to France, where he witnesses another memorable battle: the Battle of La Roche-Derrien. In this battle, Charles of Blois is defeated and taken prisoner, and our protagonist plays a prominent role. Bernard Cornwell is considered the best living author of historical adventure novels.
