The marriage of Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson was one of the most eccentric and unconventional in English society during the first half of the 20th century. She was an aristocrat, writer, and gardening expert with openly homosexual tendencies, and she served as the model for Virginia Woolf's protagonist in Orlando. He, also homosexual, was a notable writer, politician, and diplomat. Together they lived a life of asexual passion within the legendary Bloomsbury Group, devoted to literature, friendship, extramarital affairs, and the restoration of Sissinghurst Castle in Kent, whose gardens they designed and tended throughout their lives.
