Buck is a dog who lives a good life on a California ranch with his master, Judge Miller, until he is stolen and sold to pay off a gambling debt. He is taken to Alaska and there falls into the hands of a pair of Canadians caught up in the Gold Rush, who train him as a sled dog. The harsh environment causes Buck to reclaim his wild side, the only way to survive in the frigid northern lands. Jack London spent almost a year in the Yukon (Canada) gathering material for the book. The story was published in installments in the Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903 and a month later in a single volume. The book's immense popularity and success cemented London's fame. Much of the novel's appeal stems from its apparent simplicity and the intense emotion conveyed by this tale of survival.
