New York City seethes with heat and social unrest as Wyeth, a painter, experiences a creative impasse.
After attending a questionable exhibition organized by a group of upstart artists, he seeks refuge in a West Village bar, where he meets Keating, a former seminarian. During the long summer, as they grow closer, they talk and argue about God, sex, and art.
Meanwhile, while working for an art restorer, Wyeth begins to investigate the life and career of a little-known, forgotten Black artist. His research yields possible answers to questions Wyeth is only beginning to ask himself about what it means to be a Black artist creating Black art amidst the chaos and beauty of life itself.
