After the euphoria of drunkenness or the frenzy of dancing, gay bars have long been places of solidarity and sexual expression, where a marginalized clientele could gather, find refuge, feel a sense of belonging, and simply exist. But they are now scarce in urban centers, a cultural demolition that leads Atherton Lin to ask: what were gay bars? His love story becomes the thread that runs through a transatlantic journey through Los Angeles, London, San Francisco, and Blackpool.
