Jiang Cheng is a brilliant but proud and volatile student who is expelled from his privileged life and forced to leave the family that raised him to live with his biological father, a compulsive gambler and drinker. Jiang Cheng is thrust into a decaying, cold, and socially marginalized industrial city in northern China; a hostile, impoverished, and oppressive environment that feels alien to him.
