Eve Hatch lives for surprises! Just kidding. She expects every morning to be more or less the same as today. She loves her cozy Brooklyn apartment, close to her childhood best friend, Willa, and far from her traditional Midwestern family, who never quite understood her. While her job is only close to her dream, it's comfortable and stable. She always knows what to expect from life… until she finds herself pregnant after one unconventional one-night stand. The unexpected pregnancy strains every relationship in her life. Eve's loyal friendship with Willa becomes strained just when she needs her most. And it turns out that Willa's older brother, Shep, steps up to help. He's always been kind, but now he's actually interested in her, sending her surprise lunches, listening to all her complaints, and… suddenly, quite attractive? Then, as if one more complication were needed, there's the baby's father, who is (technically) supportive, but (largely) conflicted. Until now, Eve had been content to go with the flow. But now—maybe it's the hormones, maybe it's the look of Shep's shoulders in that T-shirt—Eve is starting to wonder if she's been wanting more in every aspect of her life, without even realizing it. Over the course of nine months, as Eve struggles to figure out the right next step in her expanding reality, she begins to understand that family and love, in all their forms, can surprise you when you least expect it.
