In The Delta Function, Rosa Montero plays with two moments in the life of a character, Lucía, whom we see at thirty and at sixty, that is, in her (perhaps illusory) triumphant establishment and her subsequent decline. What are we capable of doing to avoid being alone in the final stretch of life? The fear of death shapes much of our existence. Despite her resounding failures, the protagonist tirelessly searches for the person who will accompany her until her last breath, for loneliness is more unbearable to her than going from one heartbreak to another. The confrontation between entering middle age and old age gives rise to valuable reflections on sexuality, relationships with others, and one's own identity.
