The stories in *In Private Tongue* defy their own fictional nature by venturing pronouncements and strategies that seem to belong to the essay and the chronicle. Although these texts appear to play at disguising themselves in the trappings of other genres, they do not deny what they are, for each one ultimately exposes, through dialogues and arcs of dramatic tension, the intimate secrets of writing and of the moments that make a life unique. Here are revealed the creativity of memory and forgetting, the reasons for tracing our own experience in poetry, the multifaceted nature of the voices that inhabit us and those we encounter, and the unsettling presence of the double. This book is, in turn, a reading diary where the words of Sada, Montalbetti, Kristof, Moore, Coetzee, and Di Benedetto imbue with meaning the moments when the "disease of language" generates its most lacerating symptoms. In the background, Emiliano Monge, author and character, rereads his past (or perhaps his future?) in these pages.
