The seasons change: the light shifts, the landscape changes color, the heat on the earth intensifies. Adania Shibli doesn't need to anchor the story in specific places, nor provide names or dates, to transform Deception into a gripping narrative that follows the lives of a young woman and a young man whose paths run parallel, marked by the same reality: the systematic attempt to dispossess Palestinians of their land, their history, and their sense of belonging. And as time marches on, indifferent to expulsions, exile, imprisonment, or torture, Shibli transforms the Palestinian experience into a metaphorical tool for a story about how occupation infiltrates every aspect of daily life and how colonialism not only controls bodies and places but also seeks to silence narratives, erase memories, and shatter identities.
