On his fiftieth birthday, Dr. Jesús María Barceló—the world's most prestigious cardiologist—receives devastating news: he needs a heart transplant within a year or he will die from his heart condition. That same day, he receives a disturbing gift: a box containing three human hearts and two empty spaces reserved for two more. It also includes a card with a chilling message: "Happy birthday, Jesús.
