Ichijo Harumi is twenty-five years old and dreams of becoming a playwright. To support herself, she tutors Mako, a young heiress to the powerful Watsuji family, magnates of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry, in English. Invited to spend the New Year holidays with them to help her student finish her thesis, Harumi finds herself embroiled in a shocking event: Mako claims to have killed Yohe, the family patriarch. The elderly magnate, an unrepentant womanizer, allegedly tried to assault her, and in self-defense, the young woman stabbed him with a fruit knife. The Watsujis decide to conceal the truth to protect Mako and, above all, the family's honor. Harumi, unwillingly caught up in their machinations, watches as the investigation unfolds under the direction of detectives Nakazato Ukyo and Tsurumi Saburo, who soon discover that nothing adds up and that the questions multiply.
As tensions rise, Harumi begins to understand that things are not exactly as the Watsujis want people to believe, and she faces a moral dilemma that will test her loyalty, her calling, and her very conscience.
