Margaret Ryan seems to have it all in prosperous 1960s America: a husband, three children, a new family car, and a perfect house in Concordia, an exclusive gated community in Northern Virginia. Her days are spent chatting with neighbors over coffee and reading the advice in A Woman’s Place, the magazine for housewives that dictates how to dress, what to buy, and what to desire. But Margaret feels an emptiness she can't explain. The arrival of Charlotte Gustafson, an enigmatic, self-assured neighbor unlike any other, awakens questions she can no longer ignore. To get closer to Charlotte, Margaret organizes a book club and invites Bitsy and Viv, two women who also don't quite fit the ideal of the perfect wife. As they read The Feminine Mystique and other books that will shake their certainties, they dub themselves "the Bettys" and begin to question their dreams, their marriages, and the roles that have been imposed upon them.
