The word “Modernism” has almost magical resonances for the poetry reader. It evokes the exotic, sumptuous, carnal world of Rubén Darío, whose influence spread like a bridge between continents, forever revolutionizing Spanish poetry. Modernism represented a unique moment of dialogue between Latin America and Spain. It is associated with the early period of the great Antonio Machado and also, reworked in its magical mirrors, enriched the poetry and early prose of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán. “Modernism” is a word that encapsulates the best of the literature of the first half of the century.
