Emilia is the granddaughter of the late Don Bernardo Espinosa, a prominent wine merchant based in Chiclana who bequeathed his family a considerable fortune in the form of mansions, vineyards, and a winery, but also a burden that not everyone is willing to bear. As a young lady of her class, her destiny was predetermined from birth. However, Emilia is not a submissive young woman and resists accepting the husband they want to impose on her. Álvaro Alcázar, nephew of the former foreman of the Espinosa estate, has abandoned his studies at the seminary to become a grape harvester. But a cultured man like him harbors aspirations and desires very different from those expected of someone of his station. When Emilia and Álvaro's lives intersect, they will both have to confront class differences, their families' expectations, and a world where deviating from one's predetermined path comes at a very high price.
