At fifty, the Jewish professor and novelist Sacerdoti is an impertinent misanthrope going through a profound personal and professional crisis. After commenting on some misogynistic quotes from Flaubert during a class, he is dismissed and removed from the university. At the same time, he must take care of Noah, the son of a second cousin who has just died; a quiet and withdrawn boy, precociously attached to Orthodox traditions. Quite the opposite of his guardian, who takes him into a chaotic house full of books, improvising the role of father with rather clumsy results. But unexpectedly, Noah confronts him with his fears and contradictions, and little by little, a bond of affection develops between them that transforms them both.
