On March 24, 1916, the composer and pianist Enrique Granados returned to Barcelona after a triumphant New York premiere of his opera Goyescas. While crossing the English Channel, just miles from port, a German submarine fired a torpedo at the ship. His wife fell into the sea, and although Granados couldn't swim, he jumped in to save her. Witnesses recounted that they died in each other's arms, swept away by the waves. Driven by curiosity after stumbling upon this episode, the book's narrator decides to follow in the musician's footsteps in the present day.
