The Book of Lost Trades is a fascinating journey into the past, to a time when people earned their living with jobs that have almost disappeared today. Through nine trades —such as the street photographer or the saddler— this book reveals professions that were very important for centuries and that changed or vanished with the arrival of the Industrial Revolution. Some were an essential part of our tradition, like the night watchmen, who patrolled the streets well into the 1970s, or the trementinaires of the Catalan Pyrenees, itinerant sellers of medicinal herbs. Each trade is explained in the form of a story and features children who, at just twelve years old, had to leave school to start working.
