Over four nights in St. Petersburg, a lonely young man has a series of encounters with a seventeen-year-old girl, Nastenka, who lives with her blind grandmother and a deaf maid. The girl is engaged to a lodger her grandmother has had in their home, a distinguished young man who has charmed them with his reading and invitations to the opera. However, he has had to leave to attend to some business in Moscow, and although she is now certain he has returned, he has not contacted her. From this situation, Dostoevsky wrote one of his most famous stories, to which we add eleven others from the early period of his work in this volume. White Nights and Other Stories (1846-1849) reveals an author already distinguishable from the one of his great novels, although some of the stories have a comic and vaudevillian tone that may surprise the reader.
