In a small town in southern Scotland during the 17th century, blacksmith Roy Bean has just lost his wife and mother and is left alone in the world. Unable to cope, he finds new purpose when a book containing his mother's memoirs falls into his hands. From that moment on, he delves into the town's darkest corners, leading him to a secret that could change everything, prompting him to ask unanswerable questions, and ultimately revealing what lies hidden within the pages of a manuscript.
