The religious men argue, rave, and prophesy; they speak of the King and the Church, but also of future revolutions, football, conspiracies, and national ruin. What should have been a disciplined march becomes a hallucinatory and ferocious verbal comedy. The Expelled from the Kingdom reimagines the expulsion of the Jesuits in Ecuador as a choral and irreverent novel where History itself is destabilized. Through voices, apocryphal documents, visions, and temporal distortions, the novel questions the birth of a nation and the actions, omissions, and violence upon which that nation imagines itself.
