Aloysius Pendergast, Constance Greene, and Vincent D'Agosta are trapped in 1880s New York, with no way back to the 21st century. But their biggest worry isn't the year they're stranded in, but Enoch Leng, the relentless enemy who has spent decades pursuing the formula for eternal life. Leng has made Constance his target. After giving her the ashes of her sister Mary, he forces her to follow his orders with a threat impossible to ignore: if she doesn't, her past self will suffer the same fate.
