This is a unique book. For the first time, it tells the complete story of the feminine through the various religious ideas in which the mythical image of this principle has evolved: from Paleolithic goddesses, such as Ishtar in Mesopotamia, Isis in Egypt, and the goddesses of the classical world, to Israel, where the feminine is hidden, culminating in the return of the mother goddess in the figures of Mary in Christianity and Sophia among the Gnostics. This book, with its more than 400 illustrations, explains how the original myth of the goddess was lost and how the masculine divinity gradually displaced her role due to the need to situate it within the new context of the evolution of human consciousness. Now, when the models of masculinity and femininity are more blurred, when we have desacralized nature and are unable to contemplate life as a living unity, it may be necessary to understand the true nature of the ancient mother goddess in order to better grasp the psychological implications of her loss for humankind.
