The fourth volume of The History of Middle-earth offers a unique glimpse into the development of the cosmogony and geography of the worlds imagined by J.R.R. Tolkien. Among the materials compiled by Christopher Tolkien is the Ambarkanta, the author's only description of the nature of the Universe, accompanied by diagrams and maps illustrating the world's configuration before and after the cataclysms of the War of the Gods and the Fall of Númenor. The volume also includes the first map of Beleriand, the Annals of Valinor and the Annals of Beleriand, along with fragments of the translations attributed to Ælfwine. These are complemented by early versions of the great tales: The Silmarillion (1926) and the Quenta Noldorinwa (1930), the only complete narrative Tolkien ever produced of the myths and legends of the First Age.
