Tirano Banderas

In 1926, Tirano Banderas, a radical novel by Valle-Inclán in both form and content, was published for the first time. With it, the author broke with traditional narrative forms, introducing the grotesque into the novel and constructing a ferocious portrait of totalitarian power. Although set in a fictional republic (the landscape of Mexico, a country Valle visited on several occasions, is revealed as a backdrop), the novel does not seek a realistic depiction of the land but rather aims to portray the psychological structure of despotism. The figure of General Santos Banderas is not just a character, but a synthesis of the Latin American strongman, from Rosas to Trujillo, by way of Porfirio Díaz. With his rich prose, his mestizo vocabulary, his distorting gaze, and his brutal critique, Valle-Inclán opened a path that would later be followed by Asturias, Roa Bastos, García Márquez, and Vargas Llosa, among others.
