Since the day in 1978 when he was found floating in a glass tank, Abe Sapien has worked as a field agent for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). During that time, his origins remained a secret, until Abe found evidence of his previous life: that of a scientist named Langdon Everett Caul. In 1865, Caul discovered a kind of egg on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. This discovery triggered the scientist's disappearance, his wife's suicide, and his slow transformation into Abe Sapien. Recently, Abe underwent a second transformation after a young woman with psychic powers named Phoenix, believing him to be the cause of events threatening to destroy humanity, shot him in a border town in Texas.
