It's January 5th. The Shetland Islands awaken buried under a blanket of snow. Fran Hunter is walking home after dropping her daughter off at school when she sees a flock of crows circling a patch of color in the snow. It's the lifeless body of Catherine Ross, her teenage neighbor. The residents of the small village of Ravenswick are certain of the killer's identity: the reclusive Marcus Tait. But Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez believes the truth lies elsewhere. The possibility that the killer is still at large fuels distrust and suspicion throughout the small community.
