While practicing medicine, William Carlos Williams established himself as a fundamental figure in understanding American poetry. Innovative and experimental, he transcended the boundaries of the movements with which he was associated: Modernism and Imagism; creating a truly "American language." A poet who dared to view mundane things and everyday life in a radically new way, whose poems focused on the daily lives of ordinary people and championed a poetic use of colloquial language. A poet as he himself saw it: someone "whose words nibble the way home."
