Ancient Face is an intimate and vigorous collection of poems that gives voice to the experience of growing up in an environment that violates bodies and subjectivity from childhood. Lucía Baskaran traces the journey of constructing an identity marked by love, desire, gender, abortion, guilt, and patriarchal violence. Childhood, affection, motherhood, dictates of beauty, and bodily dissidence are interwoven with movingly honest images of the body. Through her verses, which oscillate between fury and tenderness, the author dismantles domestic, religious, and social mythologies, and ironically denounces the patriarchal discourse that seeks to regulate affections, desire, and bodies.
