In 1919, in a forest outside Berlin, Otto Mueller painted Two Nude Women. It all begins here. From the walls of the artist's studio to those of its first owner's office, the painting itself observes daily life. However, it is soon swept up in the tribulations of a dark historical period: Hitler's rise to power, state-sponsored antisemitism, the Nazis' labeling of modern art as "degenerate," the plundering of Jewish families, exhibitions, sales, bonfires... The painting Two Nude Women manages to survive; it is the silent witness to a world beyond its comprehension. This marvelous graphic novel (and historical novel) is the fruit of extensive research by its author, Luz, and invites us to be vigilant against any form of political and cultural authoritarianism.
