December 1527. For months, the troops of Charles V subjected the Papal City to a brutal sack, during which the greatest relics of Christendom were lost. The Sack of Rome shocked all of Europe and seemed to confirm the perverse prophecies of the enemies of the Catholic Church. The King of Spain, and Holy Roman Emperor, reached an agreement with Pope Clement VII to recover the sacred treasures that would occupy the four pillars supporting the new dome of St. Peter's Basilica. Julio de Castillo, a Spanish captain, must undertake this arduous task.
