Las noches búlgaras de la mujer torcida

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again,†the protagonist says. Thus begins the novel. But here, Manderley isn't a ruined mansion haunted by Rebecca's presence; it's the black silhouette of a tree from which twenty-two murdered children hang. The only way to escape the nightmare is to scream until you're hoarse. And then, once awake, keep screaming. You could say this is a horror story. It begins in a barbershop. The curious thing is that the protagonist would never have known anything if it weren't for his barber, who, while working, demonstrates a surprising ability to analyze small details and end up inventing alternative realities. He always does, and he's usually right. The protagonist recounts an anecdote that happened to him days before, while he was caring for his dying mother. This time, the theory the barber comes up with seems too terrible to be true. By following the thread, it's possible to find connections to a child killer who has never been caught. The novel unfolds over a weekend culminating in a descent into hell in the form of a New Year's Eve family dinner. There's little time left to devise a crazy plan that might actually work, but everything is so horrifying that it's difficult to think clearly. Sometimes it's necessary to shatter the memory of your loved ones in order to rebuild them and see them in a new light.
