Cartas a Teresa : (1948-1984)

Letters to Teresa collects the previously unpublished correspondence between Jorge Guillén and his daughter Teresa from 1948 to 1984. In 1947, Germaine Cahen, the poet's first wife, died, and from that moment on, Teresa, the couple's eldest daughter, became the pillar of the family and of her father; given the distance between them, letters served as the primary channel of communication in their relationship. The collection comprises hundreds of letters that become a valuable testament to Guillén's life both in exile (from 1938 he resided first in the United States and later in Italy) and during his return to Spain, between 1977 and 1984, the year of his death. The letters offer us a glimpse into her family life, her daily routines (worries, travels, meetings, expenses), the ordinary tasks inherent in the writer's profession (composing poems, dealing with editors, proofreading), and the academic and social relationships she cultivated throughout her career. But these letters are also a valuable testament to Teresa Guillén (Teresa Gilman, after marriage), revealing not only her family life but also her cultural and intellectual side.
