Five charred corpses, along with five cowrie shells, are found after a brutal explosion at the New York clinic where Nagorno underwent surgery in an attempt to save his life. Fearing the bodies belong to the Old Family, seeking revenge for the murder of Mother, the bloodthirsty matriarch of the Children of Adam, Gunnarr decides to flee with Adriana to avoid becoming their next victims. Bristol, 1352: Gunnarr, captain of a ship transporting pilgrims to the Galician coast, is having an intense romance with Mother. After waking up on the farm he shared with Manon Adams in Plymouth four centuries earlier, he begins to suspect his former wife intends to betray him to her enemies. Present day, Java: Lür tries to locate Iago and track down the clan branch leaders to broker a truce, now that Adana is dead. He trusts the Diplomats can help him, but fears the Hunters, who venerate Mother's heart, intend to kill the entire Old Family once and for all.
