It's 1987. After a fierce storm, Cora takes her nine-year-old daughter out to register the birth of her son. Her husband insists on maintaining the family tradition and naming the baby after him. But Cora hesitates. Going against his wishes could be dangerous, and yet, should the little boy inherit the name of generations of dominant men? The choice she makes then will shape the course of their lives. Seven years later, the boy is Bear, a name chosen by his sister and as unexpected as the storm from which it emerged. Or he is Julian, the name his mother gave him, convinced it would allow him to forge his own path. Or he is Gordon, like his father, raised in his image... though perhaps there is still a chance to break free from that mold.
