Adolescence is a stage designed for exploration, but many young people feel bored, overwhelmed, or unmotivated. At the same time, many parents feel they have lost the ability to help. This book analyzes why so many teenagers lose their connection with learning and how they can regain it. Combining extensive original research with real stories of young people who transformed their relationship with learning, the authors identify four learning modes that teenagers adopt to cope with academic and social demands, and which ultimately shape their internal narrative about their abilities, potential, and identity:
- Resistant Mode. The "problem" mode, which avoids or sabotages learning, although this attitude is often rooted in insecurity or low self-esteem. They need emotional support and connection to regain motivation.
- Passenger Mode. They operate on autopilot and get by (sometimes with good grades), but without real involvement or enjoyment. School is boring: too difficult, too easy, or disconnected from their reality.
- Achiever Mode. They seem successful, but are trapped by perfectionism and fear of failure. Their motivation depends on grades, and they lack autonomy and critical thinking.
- Explorer Mode: This represents the resilient learner. They actively engage and find meaning in what they do. They reflect on the deeper meaning of what they learn and experience, develop self-awareness, and have agency over their learning—this agency is key to maintaining their engagement.
Understanding which mode your child is in is the first step in guiding them toward a healthier relationship with learning (academic, relational, and life-related). Anderson and Winthrop offer simple -though sometimes counterintuitive- strategies for connecting with your teen, adapting your listening and communication style, sparking their curiosity, and helping them develop self-awareness and emotional self-regulation.
