Quevedo is one of those poets who defy easy definition, partly because he sought (and succeeded) in distinguishing himself with a groundbreaking poetics that earned him a place within the holy trinity of the Golden Age, alongside Lope de Vega and Luis de Góngora. His poetry presents us with a veritable world in miniature, encapsulating virtually the entire thematic repertoire of his time, often from diverse perspectives that sometimes directly contrast and can even surprise the reader.
