It all begins with a farewell: in 1874, Emeterio, a young man from Asturias, decides to emigrate to Mexico in search of fortune, bidding farewell to his parents in a remote village. Upon arriving, he rises from shop assistant to owner of a vast empire of liquor stores. But his successful business endeavors are not rewarded by the actions of his sons, who squander the fortune on a dissolute life with frequent trips to Madrid, nor by his daughters, condemned in a patriarchal society. When one of his grandsons, in the third generation, takes the reins of the family business, Emeterio faces an unexpected threat: the loss of his memory. Only the youngest grandson, determined to understand what happened to the family, reconstructs their experiences and adventures, full of triumphs and defeats, guilt and redemption. The grandson's name is Gonzalo Celorio.
