Dr. Andrade’s daughter lives in a blue-painted house, in a place where beaches with gentle waves contrast with the bustle of the opposite shore. There, shellfish gatherers rake the sand, sailors cast their gear into the water, and commuters wait at the dock for the ferry that crosses the Vigo estuary every half hour. One autumn morning, as the Galician coast recovers from the ravages of a storm, Inspector Caldas is visited by a man alarmed by his daughter’s disappearance; she had failed to show up for a family meal over the weekend and did not appear on Monday to teach her ceramics class at the School of Arts and Crafts.
