During the restoration of a church in a village in the Tierra de Campos region, it is discovered that the Romanesque carving of the Virgin and Child, to which the villagers have great devotion, has been replaced with a copy.
Cristina, an art historian, has moved to the village for the duration of the restoration, having recently separated from her partner and having nowhere else to go. She has been hired to supervise the various teams working on the church, which are quite large due to the comprehensive restoration involving several trades.
Because of her constant presence at the church, the Bishop of Palencia tasks her with investigating who among those involved in the restoration might be responsible for stealing the carving. To do so, she must juggle the investigation with her work and her attempts to resolve her personal situation.
The bishop, working behind the scenes, provides her with all the information he has on each of the participants in the restoration.
It so happens that everyone has a motive for committing the robbery, and Cristina must unravel who could have been the perpetrator.
