This is an epic tale of how the tech giant flirted with danger by tying its fortunes so closely to China. After struggling to manufacture its products on three continents, Apple was drawn to China's seemingly inexhaustible supply of cheap labor. It soon sent thousands of engineers across the Pacific, trained millions of workers, and spent hundreds of billions of dollars to create the world's most sophisticated supply chain. These capabilities allowed it to manufacture the most emblematic products of the 21st century. Apple built an advanced electronics industry in China, only to discover that its massive investments in technological improvements had inadvertently given Beijing potentially weaponized power.
In this book, journalist Patrick McGee relies on more than two hundred interviews with former company executives and engineers, and complements his stories with undisclosed meetings held by Steve Jobs, emails exchanged between senior executives, and internal memos about the threats of Chinese competition. The book highlights the unknown figures who were instrumental in Apple's rise and who tried to forge a different path, including the Mormon missionary who established the Apple Store in China, the executives of the so-called Gang of Eight, and an idealistic veteran whose hopes of improving the lives of factory workers were crushed both by the operational demands of Cupertino and by Xi Jinping's war on civil society.
Apple in China is the sometimes disturbing and always revealing story of how a direct and proud company, which once praised rebels and troublemakers (the one that encouraged us all to "think differently"), ended up passively cooperating with a belligerent regime, which increasingly controls its destiny.
