The essential facts of Jane Austen’s life are clear-cut: the daughter of a vicar and the seventh of eight children, she grew up in the Hampshire countryside during the last quarter of the eighteenth century and fulfilled her role as a contributing member of a large family. She never married—a state that, had she lived longer, would have entailed a loss of economic status and social standing. Time ran out for her; she died at just forty-one, having already published several novels, though none under her own name. Her life was so simple—though perhaps not quite as simple as her first biographer and nephew emphasized—that her achievements seem implausible.
