In the mid-1990s, cartoonist Joe Sacco completed his most ambitious journalistic work to date, *Palestine*, and turned his attention to a conflict the entire world was watching with horror and dismay: the Balkan Wars. Of all the places he visited during his time in Bosnia between 1995 and 1996, the one that stirred the greatest passion and interest in him was the Muslim enclave of Goražde—a town battered by Bosnian Serb troops, cut off from the rest of the world for years, and inhabited by people torn between the deepest despair and the hope for an increasingly unlikely peace. He dedicated his second book to this city, a work destined to establish him as one of the most significant voices in contemporary graphic novels.
